We have great pleasure to state that the Camp Education Society is rendering yeoman service in the cause of education in Pune almost for a long period of One Hundred & Thirty Six Years with seven high schools, seven primary schools & five Junior colleges and one Senior college with BCS (Bachelor of Computer Science). We have also started MBA (Master of Business Administration) in Nigdi complex, which is named after Dr. Arvind Telang Education Complex. In this complex Industrial Training is also started. In the Cantonment (including Pune city) & Nigdi as many as 15,000 students are on the rolls of the schools, Junior and Senior Colleges of the Society at present. It may be mentioned here that the bulk of the students are from backward, working and neglected families particularly in the Eastern part of Pune. It would be more correct to say that most of the students are the children of the workers’ employed in several industrial units in the vicinity of Pune.
We feel very proud & happy to place before you a brief resume of the origin, history, development of schools and educational activities from year to year, from decade to decade of Camp Education Society, Pune - 1.
At the time when the need for education of the children of the masses and need for school for the purpose was very keenly felt, a band of social thinkers and leaders of community in the Cantonment, where education was confined to a few missionary schools conducted by philanthropic persons from Christian and Parsi communities, came together and established Camp Education Society in Pune Camp in the year 1885. Amongst them prominently the late Shri. Rajanna Lingoo Polas, the late Shri. Balkrishna Sayanna Motadoo, the late Shri. Gangadharbhau Mhaske and the late Shri. Lokhande took active part and started a Marathi Primary School in Camp area of Pune. The efforts of these leading men were blessed by the great social leader, Late. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. A tiny, fragile, attractive and fascinating branches under the shade of which thousands of boys and girls were receiving drops of nectar of good education day after day.
In the year 1929, the Late Shri. Acharya P. K. Atre came to this Society’s High School in Camp, chose to make it his ‘Karmabhumi’ and worked assiduously against many odds for full 17 years as Head Master and brought himself and the school into lime light. His contribution to the development of the academic standards of the school was indeed handsome and significant. By sheer dint of his efforts and enterprising spirit he brought the unique and single distinction of conducting B. T. Classes at this institution in 1929. There after in 1934 the society launched an additional high school in Rasta Peth, Pune under the name of Raja Dhanarajgirji High School. Then Late Dr. R. K. Naidu rendered yeoman service to the society as Chairman of its Managing Board. The Society purchased a six acres plot at No. 1 Solapur road for providing a playground to the students. Shri. Acharya Atre had the honour to inaugurate this play ground in 1961.
In order to ensure education of the girls in this area adequately, a separate building project of putting up a three stored building was planned in 1962 and in the diamond jubilee year of the Society in 1965 the girls Section, ‘Kanya Shala’ was started in the new imposing 3 storeyed building which was inaugurated under the President ship of the Late Shri. Yeshwantraoji Chavan, then Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
The efforts of the Late Shri. D. B. Agarwal, the then Chairman of the Managing Board in making this project a grand success deserves special mention.
The then Chairman of the Managing Board Late Dr. A. B. Telang by his commendable persistence and painstaking endeavor has added another imposing 3- storeyed building for the new primary school in the compound of Raja Dhanrajgirji High School, Pune 11. This new building was inaugurated by the former Honorable minister for Urban Development and Housing, Maharastra State Mr. M. N. Kamble on 20.6.1983. Dr. Telang completed this project in record time with incredible speed against heavy odds.
The Society can now reasonably boast 7 High Schools, 7 Primary Schools, 7 Pre-Primary Schools, 5 Junior Colleges and 1 Senior College with about 15 thousand students on the rolls and a staff of 600 teachers and non-teaching personnel. The high percentage of academic results are registered by the schools and junior colleges of our Society year after year speak highly of their satisfactory progress.
Several past students of our schools and colleges have had the honour of being Mayors of Pune City and Vice-Presidents of Pune Cantonment Board.
The useful contributions made by the Head Masters, the Late Shri. Sarvashri Mamasaheb Deogirikar, Shri. P. K. Atre, Shri. K. R. Bhat, Shri. Wagholikar, also Shri. Sarvashri G. P. Sohoni, Shri. V. K. Bavre, Shri. V. K. Shotriya, Shri. K. B. Kulkarni and Shri. S. D. Nilegaonkar towards the successful management of the schools has to be remembered gratefully.
Particularly, the work done by Late Dr. R. K. Naidu, Late Mr. A. B. Setna, Late Mr. D. B. Agrawal and Late Mr. L. E. Ganla as Chairman of Managing Board was devoted, outstanding and greatly helpful in carrying the Society forward year after year.
